A serious accident took a strange turn on Jan. 21 when a Texas sheriff’s deputy was injured and his dog tried to protect him from first responders. The car accident occurred when a deputy with the K9 unit collided with another vehicle on Beltway 8-North near Mesa Road. When rescuers tried to help the deputy, his police dog came to his defense and made his rescue more difficult.
The accident, which occurred right before 8 a.m., also ended with five other people being injured. All of these other victims were passengers in a Chevy Avalanche, but reports state that two of these individuals were only suffering from minor injuries. The deputy, on the other hand, had to be airlifted after the accident and was still in critical condition even after undergoing surgery.
Another woman, who was driving a Kia, was also involved in the accident, but she suffered no injuries. The police dog, who finally allowed his officer to be rescued after another K9 unit was brought out to help, was taken to a nearby veterinarian clinic to ensure that he suffered no injuries. The crash resulted in the closing of all westbound lanes of the road for several hours.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing. If the investigation reveals that one of the drivers acted negligently behind the wheel, driver who is at-fault liable for the cost of medical care. After fault is determined, the victims of the accident may work with an attorney who may be helpful in ensuring that all financial losses are considered and a fair settlement is reached.
