A two-vehicle crash on Highway 277 in Texas resulted in injuries to four individuals on Oct. 9. The crash is still under investigation, but distracted driving is suspected.
The driver of a Volkswagen Jetta, a resident of Bronte, was cited in the incident. The 54-year-old man failed to control the speed of his vehicle, according to a representative of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
In a press release, officials said the accident occurred at an area of the highway between Christoval and Duff Road where road work was underway. The 43-year-old driver of a Cadillac CTS, heading southbound, stopped as directed by a flagman. The driver of the Jetta, also traveling south on the highway, failed to stop and rear-ended the Cadillac. The Cadillac spun out of control and came to rest in a ditch off the highway. The impact caused the Jetta to spin into the northbound lane before it stopped.
According to police, the driver and passengers in the Cadillac were extricated by emergency responders and taken to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. The driver of the Jetta was treated at the scene.
A distracted driving accident may be the result of texting or talking on a cell phone. When a driver fails to be alert to changing road conditions, their behavior may cause injury to other motorists. In addition, a motorist is expected to exercise particular care at roadway construction sites. Injuries may result financial burdens due to medical care including physical rehabilitation, property damage and lost wages.
