Man sentenced to 14 years for injuring soccer player

A Texas man was sentenced to 14 years in jail after being involved in a hit-and-run while driving while impaired. According to the report, the hit-and-run caused serious injuries to a University of Texas soccer player. The man left the scene of the accident, but a motorcycle rider who had witnessed the incident followed him until law enforcement officers arrived.

The man allegedly ran a red light at an intersection and struck two pedestrians as they attempted to cross the street in a pedestrian cross-walk in February 2012. The soccer player sustained critical injuries; she was still recovering from the accident at the time of the sentencing. The other pedestrian’s condition was not reported.

The man was convicted on three charges. He was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, for which he received a 10-year prison sentence, and failure to stop and render aid, for which he received a seven-year prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to intoxication assault, for which he was sentenced to a 14-year prison sentence. All three prison sentences will run concurrently.

When an accident occurs between a vehicle and a pedestrian, it’s likely that the pedestrian will be injured; they aren’t well-protected against heavy vehicles. An experienced Texas attorney may be able to help the injured individual seek compensation to cover the damages that resulted from the accident. In some cases, however, the insurance company may try to settle for less than what the individual needs. Using witness testimony, police records and accident reconstruction methods, the attorney may be able to maximize the possible compensation.
