According to the Texas Department of Safety, a Sept. 18 incident on Texas State Highway 87 in Newton County involving two vehicles that collided head-on left one person dead and two other people with injuries. The 5:45 a.m. accident occurred just north of Highway 12, reportedly.
Officials stated that a 21-year-old man driving a Chevrolet passenger vehicle north on Highway 87 attempted to overtake a Dodge pickup truck along a stretch of the highway where passing is prohibited. Upon encountering an oncoming Ford pickup truck in the southbound lane, the Chevy driver swerved back into the northbound lane but lost control of the vehicle. According to authorities, he overcorrected. Subsequently, the Chevy careened into both pickup trucks, the northbound Dodge and the southbound Ford. Traffic on Highway 87 was reportedly shut down in both directions for roughly three hours while officials commenced an investigation into the crash.
Officials pronounced the 21-year-old driver of the Chevy dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Ford, a 48-year-old man, and a passenger in that truck were both transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital with unspecified injuries. The driver of the Dodge pickup truck reportedly escaped the wreck without injuries.
