Three fatal accidents occurred in Denton County between the end of August and the beginning of September in 2014. The last accident took place on Sept. 8 around 6:45 p.m. when a 49-year-old man driving a semi-truck pulling a box trailer was traveling west on State Highway 114 near South County Line Road. That driver saw an eastbound Freightliner cross into his lane and tried to evade it, but the two vehicles still collided.
After the initial collision, the Freightliner crashed into a Hyundai Elantra and a Chevrolet Tahoe that were both traveling west, and the 50-year-old driver of the Hyundai died at the scene. The drivers of the westbound semi-truck and the Chevrolet received treatment at the crash site. The 60-year-old driver of the Freightliner was taken to a Fort Worth hospital by an air ambulance.
Another fatal crash happened on Sept. 7 in Carrollton around 8:40 p.m. when a 40-year-old woman drove through a grassy median on Interstate 35E. Her vehicle flipped over a barricade and came to rest in the roadway’s northbound lanes. She was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
On Aug. 26, a vehicle in Sanger hit a bump on View Road and went airborne before sliding sideways and striking a utility pole. The impact caused it to flip, and it ran into a tree. The 21-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger died, and two passengers were taken to Medical Center of Plano after suffering critical injuries.
Fatal truck accidents can leave victims’ families suffering both emotionally and financially. When a family member is killed in an accident involving a semi or tractor-trailer, that victim’s loved ones may file a wrongful death claim in civil court. Depending on the circumstances of the accident, there may be evidence to support lawsuits against both the truck driver as well as that individual’s employer.
